Watching Ali Abbasi’s amazing film "The Apprentice" it leaves you feeling anxious. How can someone be so empty of feelings and morals, and more importantly, how can millions of people vote for someone like that to rule the country. But Abbasi explores all these aspects in a highly stylized and captivating portrait of a man who had it all and yearned for more.
The film never seems dead, always moving forward
The Apprentice follows Donald Trump through a certain period of his career, from the beginning to the madness that spiraled into his great success in the 90s, and in particular his relationship with his lawyer, Roy Cohn. First of all I have to say this film is GORGEOUS, it has style, the vintage grainy feel of the 80’s/90’s is replicated in such a beautiful way that it makes every single frame filled with detail and pop of color. The feel of the era is definitely done with care, as is the music with some well-chosen excellent songs to accompany the scenes. The comparisons to films like Wall Street etc are super obvious, but Ali manages to make them her own.
Go watch it!
It’s a portrait that’s not at all glamorous and super anxiety-inducing because it’s truly horrifying how someone could be like that. The acting is phenomenal and top notch, especially Sebastian Stan who gives a terrifying performance – this really is the Trump we’ve seen on TV. If there is one negative thing I can think of about this film it is that it may not explore many of the relationships in the film in a deeper way. Some of the characters in the film feel a bit disconnected from the narrative, but that doesn’t detract from how great the film is.
